What is Arbitrum?

Arbitrum is a layer 2 blockchain that is built on Ethereum. At the core of Arbitrum is Optimistic Rollup technology, which allows developers to run Ethereum smart contracts and decentralized applications without having to make changes, while reducing transaction fees and increasing throughput. In the first half of 2022, Arbitrum ranked as the leader among L2 solutions for Ethereum in terms of number of transactions, number of available applications, and Total Value Locked (TVL – Total Value Locked). Currently, more than $6 billion is locked on its smart contracts.

Arbitrum is a project developed by an American organization founded in 2018 in New York City by Ed Felten, Steven Goldfeder and Harry Kalodner. All of them have expertise in cryptography and blockchain technologies. Ed Felten was previously a professor of computer science at Princeton University.

Optimistic Rollups Technology

Arbitrum uses Optimistic Rollups, which combines multiple transactions into a single packet that is sent to the Ethereum core network for storage and validation.
The transactions are processed outside of the Ethereum blockchain, reducing network load and transaction costs. The data from these transactions is then aggregated and written to Ethereum. All transactions are considered valid unless proof of error is presented. This simplifies and speeds up processing.

Network structure

There are several key elements interacting in the Arbitrum network:

  • The Sequencer sorts transactions to ensure fast validation and minimize latency.
  • Validators are responsible for verifying the correctness of transactions and maintaining network security.
  • The underlying blockchain (Ethereum) is the base layer for storing and validating transaction details.

Decentralization and security

Arbitrum maintains a decentralized structure by allowing any user to verify transactions through the Fraud Proofs mechanism. This provides transparency and protection against misconduct.

High performance and scalability

  • Processing transactions outside the Ethereum network allows Arbitrum to provide high speed and throughput.
  • Transactions are confirmed within seconds, making the network suitable for large-scale applications.
  • Arbitrum can process thousands of transactions per second, far exceeding the capabilities of the underlying Ethereum network.

Savings on commissions

Arbitrum significantly reduces transaction costs by minimizing interaction with the Ethereum core network.
Users pay less for transactions, making the platform profitable for all participants.

Decentralized Finance (DeFi)

  • Popular protocols such as Uniswap and Curve use Arbitrum to optimize transaction costs.
  • Token trading platforms use the network to issue and sell NFTs at minimal cost.
  • Gaming platforms and decentralized applications use Arbitrum for speed and low transaction costs.

Benefits of Arbitrum

  • Fast transaction processing without loss of security.
  • Reduced fees compared to Ethereum.
  • Full compatibility with existing dApps.
  • Wide range of applications in various industries.
  • Arbitrum has established itself as a promising solution that can increase the efficiency and accessibility of work with blockchain.

When’s the listing?

The Arbitrum token was added to major cryptocurrency exchanges on March 23, 2023. On that day, exchanges such as Binance, Bybit, Huobi and MEXC opened ARB trading in various pairs, including ARB/BTC and ARB/USDT.

Token price

Since the moment of listing the price of ARB demonstrated significant volatility. On the first day of trading the price reached a maximum of about $9.86, but then declined. In the following months, the price fluctuated, reaching a low of about $0.43 in August 2024. The current price reflects a decline of about 91% from the historical high.

How to buy tokens

The Arbitrum token (ARB) can be purchased on major cryptocurrency exchanges or through decentralized platforms.

1. Purchase of ARB on centralized exchanges (CEX)

Exchanges such as Binance, Bybit, Coinbase, and Huobi support ARB trading in pairs with popular cryptocurrencies such as USDT, BTC, or ETH.

Steps:

  • Registration
Register on the selected exchange and complete identity verification (KYC) if required.
  • Deposit
Deposit funds in fiat currency (USD, EUR, etc.) or cryptocurrency (e.g. USDT or ETH).
  • Search ARB
Go to the “Trading” section and enter “ARB” in the search bar.
  • Selecting a trading pair
Select a suitable pair, for example ARB/USDT or ARB/BTC.
  • Transaction execution
Specify the desired amount of ARB and select the order type (market order for immediate execution or limit order for buying at a specified price).
  • Receiving tokens
After the order is executed, ARB tokens will be credited to your exchange wallet.
  • Transfer to an external wallet (optional)
If you want to increase your security, transfer tokens to an external wallet compatible with Arbitrum.

2. Buying ARB on decentralized exchanges (DEX)

Arbitrum is supported by DEXs such as Uniswap or SushiSwap.

Steps:

  • Connecting a wallet
Use a cryptocurrency wallet (e.g. MetaMask or WalletConnect) that supports the Arbitrum network.
  • Funding your wallet
Deposit ETH into your wallet as you will need it to pay for gas and exchange for ARB.
  • Switch to DEX
Go to a platform that supports Arbitrum and connect your wallet.
  • Selecting a token
Find the ARB in the token list or add its contract address if the token is not displayed.
  • Exchange
Specify how much ETH or other cryptocurrency you want to exchange for ARB and confirm the transaction.
  • Transaction confirmation
Sign the transaction in the wallet and wait for it to complete.

3. Purchase via P2P (peer-to-peer trading)

Some platforms, such as Binance, support P2P services where you can buy USDT and then exchange it for ARB via spot trading.

Tips:

  • Use trusted exchanges and wallets to prevent fraud.
  • Check transaction fees before buying.
  • Make sure your wallet supports the Arbitrum network.
